NIMRD “Grigore Antipa” Constanta, Romania, celebrated the International Black Sea Day 2014 by organizing a series of scientific and educational activities.

Together with the Natural Sciences Museum Complex of Constanta, NIMRD was co-organizer of the symposium “Black Sea – Past, Present and Future”, held on 31 October, in the Conference Hall of the Complex. The symposium reunited researchers, members of the academia and authorities, who debated on the current state of the Black Sea ecosystem.





The activities dedicated to the International Black Sea Day continued with a work visit to the Natural Sciences Museum Complex of Constanta of the 20 members of the Junior Ranger ecologist club from the 2 May Elementary School. These middle school pupils have always been involved in ecological education and awareness activities, by constantly monitoring the Vama veche – 2 Mai Marine Reserve, under NIMRD’s custody.



The celebration of the International Black Sea Day continued in an innovative manner by organizing an official chess competition for children.

The Black Sea Day Chess Challenge 2014 was hosted by NIMRD on 1 November 2014 and was organized by NIMRD in partnership with the Fianchetto Chess Club from Constanta, the Balkan Environmental Association (B.EN.A.) and the European Environmental Association (A.E.M.).bs05


76 young chess players, aged between 5 and 14, from chess clubs all around the Constanta County, participated in this challenge.


Awards, cups and medals were granted to the best of them.



NIMRD experts took this opportunity to familiarize the young participants and their parents to the aspects concerning the need to protect the marine environment. Also, all participants were introduced to the main goals of the PERSEUS and CoCoNET projects.
