A part of the water area of the Karkinitskiy Gulf of the Black Sea has been declared a botanical preserve of national importance "Maloye Fillofornoye Pole" (Small Phyllophora field). The President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych has signed a decree creating a new object of natural reserve fund of Ukraine which area amounts 385 square kilometers.

Dr. Natalya Milchakova, Head of the Phytoresources Laboratory of IBSS said: "Phyllophora is a unique species of algae, it can grow attached to the substrate, and can generate huge accumulations on the bottom in the form of unattached layers". "Over the past decade, efforts of many experts were directed to the remains of a Small Field of Phyllophora to became an object of natural reserve fund of Ukraine because there are no such large areas of Phyllophora anywhere in the World Ocean except the Black Sea".

Until the early 90's Phyllophora was getting massively on the Zernov's Phyllophora Field. Commercial extraction of algae almost destroyed this natural site and only the small field of Phyllophora in the Karkinitskiy Gulf is still in good condition.

According to experts opinion, creation of the preserve will restore one of the largest colonies of Phyllophora. Within three months borders of the MPA will be designated and any commercial or business activity inside this area will be prohibited.
