Summary

The 2nd International Scientific Conference "Biodiversity and sustainable development" has been held on September, 12-15, 2012 in the Crimean Scientific Center and Taurida National University (Simferopol, Crimea, Ukraine).

The main topics of conference were:

-Structure and diversity of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems

-The ecosystem functioning features at different levels

-Landscape diversity and geo-ecological problems

-Wetlands as model sites for diversity maintenance

Methods of estimation, modeling and prognosis of biological and landscape diversity under anthropogenic influence

-Strategy and legal aspects of biodiversity conservation

-Biological collections, parks and gardens.

Applications from the scientists of 92 research institutions and universities of Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Moldova and Georgia have been received. The conference proceedings include more than 180 works in biological and landscape diversity, bioresources, nature conservation and sustainable development.

There were 5 research reports from the IBSS NANU supported by CoCoNet which have been presented at the conference. The participants stressed that infringement of valuable natural ecosystems of Crimea (which is one of the IUCN European centers of biodiversity) is continuing.

The participants consider necessary to develop government programs concerning the Black Sea fisheries restoration, invasion species, sea bottom mining, to involve experts and scientists in site selection for tourism, to include hypersaline lagoons to the list of prospective sites for conservation, to develop guidelines on biodiversity monitoring in protected areas, to develop the Red Book of the Crimea.
