CoCoNet Black Sea Stakeholders Meeting for "Marine Protected Areas" was held under the coordination of Prof. Dr. Murat Sezgin, Dean of the Fisheries Faculty on 11st August 2015 in Sinop University, Fisheries Faculty (SNU-FF).
Our university keeps on its social, economic, cultural and scientific contributions to its surrounding area. Sinop University, integrated with its city and surroundings, leads scientific studies under the leadership of our rector Prof. Dr. Nihat Dalgın.
In this context, the meeting of "Marine Protected Areas" was held in the Fisheries Faculty, Sinop University on 11.08.2015 as a partner of the continuing CoCoNet Project (Towards Coast to Coast NETworks of marine protected areas - from the shore to the high and deep sea- coupled with sea-based wind energy potential) in the scope of the EU 7th framework programme. Chairmen and board members of Fisheries cooperatives in Sinop and its vicinity also attended the meeting.
During the meeting held under the coordination of Prof. Dr. Murat Sezgin, Dean of the Fisheries Faculty, the Project partner from SNU-FF Prof. Dr. Levent Bat presented a speech of "Scope and Objectives of CoCoNet Project". Moreover, Asst. Prof. Dr. Bülent Topaloğlu from Istanbul University, Fisheries Faculty made a presentation on "The Necessity of Marine Protection Areas" and Asst. Prof. Dr. Yakup Erdem from Sinop University, Fisheries Faculty made a presentation under the title of "Marine Protected Areas and Fisheries".
Following the presentations, managers of the Fisheries Cooperatives submitted their questions and suggestions on "Marine Protected Areas". Regional Chairman of the S.S. Sinop-Kastamonu Union of Fisheries Cooperatives Ali Bayrak said; "This meeting is extremely important for us. We reached much important information about the subject. The university, with these meetings, will lead to the strengthening of information exchange link between our unions. We are hopeful to move along with the university on any platform as cooperatives at the point to receive the support of our university and we will be very pleased to participate in the future meetings of the university".
Prof. Dr. Murat Sezgin, Dean of the Faculty of Fisheries, holding the meeting stated that "Fisheries is the locomotive power of this area and our target is to be in cooperation with fishermen in all fields as Fisheries Faculty and to support fishing and development of fishing activities. This was the beginning meeting of this cooperation. In the future, we want to host important and wide-ranging organizations concerning our fishermen and discuss their problems".
