CoCoNet Press Release February 2015
CoCoNet Third General Assembly and Sytnthetic Workshop
The Third CoCoNet General Assembly and the Synthetic Workshop was held in Palais de la Porte Dorée, Paris, on 4-6 February 2015.
Our project, Towards COast to COast NETworks of marine protected areas (from the shore to the high and deep sea), coupled with sea-based wind energy potential, has now entered its final year. Extensive field studies have been carried out and numerous workshops/seminars were organized during the past three years. To evaluate what we have done so far and to start synthesizing all the outcomes to compile guidelines for MPA networks in the Mediterranean and Black Sea, 87 researchers from 37 institutions gathered in Paris.
The coordinator of the Project, Dr. Ferdinando Boero, once again, stressed the importance of a holistic approach towards the protection of marine ecosystems in the Mediterranean and Black Sea. Geodatabase (CoCoNet WEBGIS http://coconetgis.ismar.cnr.it/) has been created to store all the information on habitats, biodiversity, human impacts, etc., collected through the projet. Patterns (e.g. habitat distribution)and processes (e.g. connectivity) will lead to identify natural networks not only in the coastal areas but also in the high and the deep seas.
Wind energy assessment with detailed wind charts will tell us where the installation of Offshore Wind Farms (OWF) is promising from the point of view of clean energy production. The match of these layers will tell us if and where OWF are compatible with good envirorment status and networks of marine protected areas.
One of the highlights of this meeting was the premiere of CoCoNet documentary film “from hot spots to nets” directed by Roberto Rinaldi. This film was produced as a part of dissemination activity to reach wider audience to explain and stress the importance of marine protected areas, networks, together with clean energy production by OWF. The film is full of beautiful footages taken in the Mediterranean and Black Sea. It will be presented at various conferences and seminars in coming months.
