CoCoNet Press Release 38

CoCoNet Press Release May-June 2015

The CoCoNet Project “Towards Coast to Coast Networks of marine protected areas (from the shore to the high and deep sea), coupled with sea-based wind energy potential” aims to produce guidelines to design, manage and monitor networks of MPAs with multidisciplinary approaches as well as an enriched wind atlas for both the Mediterranean and the Black Seas. It was started in February 2012 and now we are in the final year to conclude the project after many field studies, workshops and publications. We organized two meetings in late May and early June for this purpose.

The Second Synthetic Workshop, the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research, Anavyssos, Greece, 25-26 May 2015

This workshop was the second part of the synthetic workshop that was held in Paris during February 2015. There were about 40 participants from all workpackages to discuss the content of the booklet of guidelines for MPAs networks. The project coordinator, Ferdinando Boero, emphasized that we, humans, need to adapt ourselves to protect nature, thus we must consider ecosystem functioning when establishing MPAs networks.

The Focus Workshop on Connectivity, the Endoume Marine Station, Marseille, France, 2-4 June 2015

The goal of this workshop was to identify and summarize key results on connectivity processes gathered through field and modeling work. 35 researchers, experts on oceanography, propagules dispersion, beta-diversity and genetic, compared and discussed their results. The group also drafted a contribution to guidelines on how to expand the MPAs network in the Mediterranean and Black Sea based on connectivity processes.
